Non Swim Training

I searched the forum prior to this post - nothing really seem to come up.

So just wondering what type of additional training people are doing when you are NOT swimming. (god forbid!)

Myself - i do 3 things

Surfing
Cross Country Skiing (double poling)
Weightlifting

All seem to benefit swimming, especially the lats get a good going over and a bit of core strength.

Search seems broken at the moment but there was a thread on Cross Training a while back

Sorry about the search -- it's fixed now.

Lots of good discussion on cross-training:

Cycling. Great for legs and endurance.

It's always a bad hair day when you work at a pool.

I spin 2 to 3 hours at a time. It's a great way to give the shoulders a break. Outrigger canoeing is another favourite. I learn about open water conditions and have been able to transfer some of the surfing technique to swimming. It also works the same muscle groups in very similar was as/to swimming.

From experience my surfing is gaining from the swimming - basically i can catch waves earlier then i used to.

I reckon the swimming gains from the surfing specially the catch/ pull muscles and feel for the water - in regards to daily mileage 1hour surfing = 1km swim. Now that's an ACTIVE hour not just sitting around on the board.
