The word is that Sarah is approaching the finish and Elaine is 500 yards ahead of Craig.

  • That's 4 swims in less than 4 weeks. Marcy McDonald swam , as the first American about 3 weeks ago. Poor Craig, he had boat trouble again.. but soldiered on.
Well done. I love the fact that all three started together and finished very closely as well.

I think this is the first triple crown of lake monster swims.

A wonderful assembly of Swimmer Scouts and crew gathered at Fort Augustus, Scotland at 5:30 am on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 to swim the 22.2 mile length of Loch Ness with water temps in the 50s.

Sarah Thomas, Elaine Kornbau Howley, and Craig Lenning stared down the monster, took on the challenge, swam the length of this cold water lake and climbed out of the water at Lochend Beach at Inverness.

What struck me most, aside from the beauty and spirit of Loch Ness itself, was that each of these accomplished swimmers had their unspoken doubts and concerns. Each overcame them. Each walked ashore on the other side.

Two completed the Triple Crown of Lake Monster Swims.
Thomas may have set a female non-wetsuit record with her time of 10:52.

"Expedition swimming" at its very best.

It was the best day to swim all year and the three swimmers were strong and successful. Congratulations to all. Not a swim to be undertaken lightly. Many try, few succeed.

The current ratified record swim time for Loch Ness is 9hrs 25mins 37 secs by a lady Rachel Godburn.

That would probably make Sarah's crossing the second fastest female, non wetsuit. The records related to swims of Loch Ness are surprisingly difficult to obtain. So far we have identified about 15 solo swimmers, official and unofficial who have done this swim, including Marcy MacDonald and the three Swimmer Scouts.
