Philly area open water swim events (and a pool aquathlon)
John Kenny,, a Philly area race director and swim coach with extensive open water experience, has been putting on some wonderful swims in our area, including some new events (last year and the year before). His events are very affordable and low-key, as well as very well organized. Here are some you might be interested in. I've done all of these and can tell you there's METICULOUS attention to safety and a generous spread of food afterward. All the swims take place in the Schuylkill River, starting/finishing in Eagleville, PA, except for the French Creek Triathlon--swim in Hopewell Lake, and bike/run in French Creek State Park--and the French Creek Aquathlon: pool swim.
Stand-alone open water swims:
Throughout summer: Open Water Series 2017--half-mile swims, six weekday evenings at various points during late spring and summer: http://tinyurl.com/ybaqpmgh
River Day 5k and 1 mile swims, August 5. http://tinyurl.com/ycmzjhat
Charles Bender Memorial Marathon Swim and Relay... an 8 mile swim, beginning downstream, then 4 miles upstream, before turning back downstream to the finish. As noted, relay option is available. In the relay, participants take turns kayaking (in some cases, two kayaks were used--a practical option for teams of four. http://tinyurl.com/y8oxbypq
French Creek Triathlon: choice of sprint or Olympic--aqua bike and relay are also available (Olympic only). Challenging run and bike course--but the swim course is flat. http://tinyurl.com/ydam93br
PS If you have kids, they can participate in the ToughKids Tri, held the day before, same location... More info here: http://tinyurl.com/yab655yp
French Creek Aquathlon: 200 or 1000m swim (in 50m pool)... your choice of distance, plus 5k run. Relay available (so if you want to get a runner friend to join you, this is a good choice).Link isn't up yet for this year, but event date is Aug. 27.
