I found this interesting group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/160405044160785

The purpose of this group is to give open water distance swimming organizations/swimmers a place to post requests for support for upcoming events and to share information regarding support for those interested in volunteering. If you are interested in doing support for an event or know someone who is looking to volunteer feel free to join this group as well.

One of the best ways to begin understanding long open water swims is to volunteer and crew at an event. It's important for swimmers to know that for the sport to be sustainable, they need to consider giving back and crewing for a fellow swimmer. Sometimes people doubt whether they can kayak that far let alone swim that far. It can be strenuous when facing a headwind as your swimmer avoids the wind by staying low in the water but the adrenaline rush of helping a swimmer accomplish their goal is very satisfying. Every time I've crewed for someone I learn something new - or at least a different approach to long open water swims.

A few crew spots remain at SCAR SWIM 2015 and the kayak is provided and transported to each lake. I'm sure there are many volunteer opportunities with NYC Swim, the Kingdom Swims, Swim the Suck, 8 Bridges, Portland Bridge Swim, Swim Around Charleston, etc. . . . all of which appreciate the help that volunteers provide. Consider getting involved on the crew side of a swim - you'll find it very satisfying.
