I think that spot is on loan from @courtneypaulk

    Route measured: http://andrewswims.com/pend-oreille-swim-route/

Weather looks like clear skies, light winds, and hot hot hot again today.

An update or two may be available on twitter (@)andrewswims and on facebook as well, for those of you who stay up way too late on Wednesday nights.

Any update? Did she dive in yet? All I see at her Spot Tracker is her last swim in the Boston Hahbuh.

We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams

Forgot the time change. Doh! I'm just so excited!

Should be starting ant minute. She is using Courtney Paulk's SPOT. That was Courtney's track at this years BLS.
  • malinakamalinaka Seattle, WACharter Member
SPOT tracker for dummies: don't PUSH the track button, PUSH AND HOLD the track button. Should be online now.

@malinaka got the SPOT on. The first point is in Boston so you have to zoom into northern Idaho. She is making good progress. They got a late start, 7:50pm. The last few points are together and drifting west. I hope the isn't a problem.
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
Regular tweets going out, @AnderwSwims. They are in water that is 1160 feet deep!!
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
Back on track. I'm guessing the main escort had engine problems.
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
About 9:40 total swim time. About 2/3 done?? Elaine is crossing over to the western side of the lake in prep to make the bend to the left.

I have to say @malinakA looks like he's having far too easy a time out here! Next thing he'll be having a barbeque.

Update from Sandpoint Online FB page:

"Good morning: first dispatch of the morning from the swim is the the swim team - but not the swimmer - encountered trouble at about 3:20 a.m. when the engine of the Seabiscuit died and left them dead in the water. Elaine however swam on with the kayak as safety boat as well as official observer Andrew Malinak, himself a marathon swimmer, joining Elaine to swim alongside. We'll have another update shortly on Elaine's historic attempt to swim the length of Lake Pend Oreille."
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
Elaine has about 13 miles to go.
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
She is now almost 2/3rds complete.
  • courtneypaulkcourtneypaulk Richmond, VirginiaMember
I fixed the tracker to remove the BLS points so it is now just showing Elaine's swim in Lake Pend Oreille. Makes is much easier to zoom in. Glad Andrew figured out the need to hold down the tracker button :)
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
Elaine is about 15 hours into the swim and has covered about 25 miles. About 8 miles to go!

Elaine is a bad ass. Smart too, start at night, swim into the day.
I love the name of the lake as well, "Hanging ear " or something like that. My french is waaay too rusty.
  • jkormanikjkormanik Boise, IdahoMember
Pend Oreille - "hangs from the ears." It is a BEAUTIFUL location. Here's some beta on the lake itself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Pend_Oreille

Elaine is AMAZING. I have't been able to take my eye of the Spot track!

Elaine is now in the upper lobe of Lake Pend Oreille!

I LOVE following spot trackers! Thanks for all the updates. GOOOOOO ELAINE!!!!
  • I can't imagine what her shoulders feel like. The knuckle of my clicking finger is killing me!

Glad to she this getting the attention. The residents seem to be really into it (and Lou's is getting their money's worth out of that banner). Listening to Anthony Mc Carley's interview where he was commenting what a pleasant experience it was to have people cheering for him at the finish. It seems as though there is going to be quite the event at Elaine's finish line.

I daresay that she is inspiring more than one little girl!

I don't believe in jinxes. And no matter what happens from here, all I can say is all I've been saying all day. SPECFREAKINGTACULAR!

Can I just say, I love how tastefully this swim has been promoted?

No bullshit, no exaggerated hype. Just say when, where, how, and what you are doing -- just the facts, ma'am -- and then DO IT. Reach out to a local reporter or two to help you get the word out. Find a qualified, technologically capable observer such as Andrew to document it. And people will recognize it for what it is: a remarkable athletic achievement.

    Bring it home, Elaine!!

Less than 2 miles out of Sandpoint. She must be able to see the finish at this point. I'm guessing 3:30 pm completion time (Idaho time). Horse back to the barn at this point.
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
Elaine has about 1 mile to go! She is going to finish with a time close to 21 hours.
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
The SPOT just leapt forward. The escort boat is probably going ahead to the finish. I hope she finishes next to the Statue of Liberty.
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
Last feed 33 minutes ago. Motor on the escort boat died 27 minutes ago and was towed in to the finish. Andrew stole a RIB for the final mile and they just passed 20 hours 3 minutes ago.

    Congrats on an awesome swim!
  • Congrats. That is just so awesome! Inspired to do more.

Excellence is born of preparation, dedication, focus and tenacity; compromise on any of these and you become average.

That is AMAZING! You know what I like about the photo of Elaine sitting in the chair...all of the kids surrounding her. This bodes well for our sport, wouldn't you say???

And if I might also congratulate the crew. Congratulations crew.

Props too, to Grecoc. Thank you man!

And an "ups" for Ucan. If I were Lou's, I'd start selling "Ucan drivers" (Ucan openers?) "the drink that gives you both "Beer Muscles" and the endurance to back them up (somewhat)."

I'm afraid people will misjudge this, but. As to the children in the picture. What I like is that they get to see a wonderful athlete with a human body. They are disabused of the "impossible" body image of the Gymnast, Ballerina, Figure Skater, Barbi Doll. And the mommies are disabused of the notion that only teen to 20somethings can be "World Record Holders"

It's the same with the men in this sport. And this is to say that people of all shapes, sizes and ages can and do extraordinary things in this sport.

Thanks, all! It was EPIC. And I can't thank @malinaka enough for not only being a great observer who catalogued absolutely everything (did you see the FB post about me peeing? Yeah, he was that detailed), but also the unofficial PR director from both the main boat and the zodiac he so expertly piloted for at least half the swim. My crew was amazing. I'm so spoiled that I was looked after so well by Scott, Bruce, Cindy, Sunny, Randy, Val, Jackie, Eric, and Mark. And Duke, the poodle. I don't know what can possibly top this experience. Thanks for following along. :-) And PS, I did finally get that beer!

First, check out the Pend Oreille necklace in the above photo. Then...

Since this event was sanctioned by The Community, I now present to you The Community: my observations of Elaine's swim across Lake Pend Oreille.

A PDF of my typed up log is here,
a ZIP file of data(!) is here,
and a webpage with all this and a few notes is to the left a few words.

Eventually, I'm going to write a narrative or two summarizing the highlights of the swim, especially the exciting parts that aren't captured too well by, "stroke rate 68, winds E 5kt, waves <1ft."

To summarize: The Queen is squeaky clean.

Please do let me know if you have questions or comments about any of this.

  • Elaine is amazing. Andrew, I so enjoyed your updates!

The documentarian Scott Rulander has posted this video of Elaine's swim:

Obviously, the highlight of the video is at 2:48, a shot of me in a speedo in the middle of the night trying to restart the RIB.
