@ ssthomas.. This is all based out of SERC and the $25 is going to be covering that. KISS, Keep it simple ......
You will be reqd to sign a waiver, which we will do Friday night.

I am officially capping this at 75 people. We have a team of 8, a team of 12 and it looks as if we might meet the75 limit. This is mainly due to safety issues that COULD arise in the dark , cold of Feb nights.
If you need a team, let me know. Trying to balance, fast w "not so fast" local w out of towner.
    Keep swimming :)

I may or may not swim depending on how much winter swimming I get in, but I will offer up my spare room/office (with inflatable queen mattress) to visiting swimmer(s). Couch also possible. I am a 20 minute walk from Aquatic Park.

I'll have one day to acclimate! Hopefully my teammates will be slow :)

We are up to SIX teams.. If you need a team... we can find you a space.
    PM or email me.
Thank you everyone for your interest.

    Question for Suzie:

Is this a competition, in any form? Not that I think it should or shouldn't be, it will be fun either way...

But I just got a message from someone trying to recruit me for their team, apparently so they would have a better chance of "beating" a certain other team. Which surprised me because I didn't think it was a competition.

Will you be listing results? In ranked order?

    Just curious.

Clearly whichever team swims the fewest laps will be the hard core folk as they will be spending the longest intervals in the water. The cheaters who whip around in 20 minutes or less should be mocked appropriately for their wimpiness :D :D

(and I am likely to be applauding all participants from the warmth of the club unless I manage drag my own wimpy self back into the bay soon)

    ha!

but is there necessarily a limit of one lap per swimmer?

Elaine and I are booking an Alcatraz swim with Gary for the Monday morning after the 24 hour relay swim. There is room for 3 more swimmers. We will have to swim as a pod an stick by the boat. We will swim into Aquatic Park and finish at the SERC. It will cost about $100/swimmer. PM me if you are interested.
  • suziedodssuziedods Charter Member
This is NOT a competition, unless you make it or want it to be one. There is NOT a limit to the # of laps/ loops. ( see your post about the La Tuque swim). I think the 'scenic ' swimmers will be coveted as that means you get more rest.. When I get to a computer I will post my'rules'. :)

What we will be doing is checking people off as they round the dock to A)continue another loop or B) tag off for the next swimmer. So, we will be keeping TRACK and by default count...I even have a plan in place if someone doesn't check off in a timely fashion.
However.. I am not going to have a "winner " per se. If a certain team wants to count how many loops they do.. fine! I am more concerned with making sure everyone swims safely, has a good time, meets new people, share stories and has enough to eat.
    Priorities!
No limit to the number of loops you do... but if someone "tanks".... they are out.. no more swimming for them.
I will have a sign up sheet at SERC on NYD......
    Let the madness begin.

IF you have any questions that you don't see answered previously, please ask them now.
I want to make sure that the meeting Friday night goes well and quickly and that while I hope I have thought of all contingencies, I am %100 sure there is something I have forgotten and someone else will think of.
    Please ask....

plane tickets booked, hotel booked, and check in the mail. now, just need to count down the days, actually start swimming a little, and figure out how to get my sleeping bag into a carry on! :-)
  • lakespraylakespray Senior Member
@suziedods just piggy backing off ssthomas comment, I will somehow stuff my own sleeping bag into carry on but I think those of us who are traveling in would likely appreciate locally sourced extra sleeping bags and or blankets that might be voluntarily provided.
  • suziedodssuziedods Charter Member
@lakespray and @ssthomas..... we are working on it! It may not be full fledged sleeping bag and it may have little pink angels or thomas the train on it but we will have cushioning for our tired bods.... ( locally sourced of course, this IS SF)

Swimmers and crew are assembling for a 9:00am (?) start. It is a rainy day with rain forecast through Sunday. The water is a toasty 51.5 degrees (10.8C). It's going to be a long, fun day.

    not helpful, niek.

@gregoc, click the blue icon just below the "Bold" formatting icon in the text box. iPhone should then give you a prompt to upload an image.

i'll be over at SERC in a few minutes and can help :)

Niek, because the question was about uploading images specifically to the Forum.

These are a group of hardcore cold water swimmers. Too many to even name drop, but I am honored to be part of it. I have one more turn before it gets wicked dark.

Next round for me will be in the dark.
  • JBirrrdJBirrrd MarylandSenior Member
You really don't need to be afraid of the dark. It's the things in the dark you need to worry about...
    Stay warm. :-)
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
I love swimming in the dark, but this swim is unescorted and the markers are not lit. The lights of the city are beautiful though.
  • gregocgregoc Charter Member
3:45am here. Rain continues, cold water continues and the relay continues. They have switched to a 1/4 out and back along a buoy line for safety sake.

@Sharko, I was psyched to finally meet you. You and everyone else. It was an impressive collection of cold water swimmers.

The 24 hour relay was a big success! A huge thank you to Suzie Dods. Also a big thank you goes out to all of the volunteers (dock crew, kayakers, kitchen crew, etc). I cant forget the clubs as well (both South End and the Dolphin). It was great to see how fluid the organization was. As conditions changed so did the communication, course, tracking, etc.
Also a big thank you to Team 300. They were the best, but I am not being impartial. Greg, Elaine, Ranie, Jackie, myself, and Kate (in that order for 24 hours straight).
Now Elaine and I are off to swim from Alcatraz.
  • suziedodssuziedods Charter Member
We tried to light the markers....
Still a bit tired, but thank you everyone for participating. A few bugs to work out.( duh) but my goal was to have everyone alive ( one minor head bump) and speaking to each other. I think there are a couple of folks that are not speaking to me... but...
Appreciate everyone's co-operation at the course change in the middle of the night and flexibility in "going w the flow".
    Need more pizza, less bread.
I so need to thank several key people, Lynn Sywolski, who filled in at EVERY seeming gap.. from Costco run, to kayaking to kitchen to clean up. My sister Laura Leahy, who despite only having done her first ever open water swim in September signed on to do this. When she WISELY decided that she had had enough... she stepped in and COOKED BACON for 75 people at 2 am. She kept the kitchen running ALL night. Diane Walton, the DC president for staying up all night as well and opening the DC to this event, for SERC in general for saying YES with no fuss to hosting this event w no fuss, for Sylvia M for cheerfully saying YES and swimming w such joy and power. For ALL the DOCK people and kayakers. Good god.. did NOT see that as being such a chore.
Still a bit overwhelmed, comments suggestions welcome and yeah... we'll do it again next year. Why not? Nancy Friedman twitted some of this on the Dolphin Club twitter feed ... I don't know what it is but if you are interested I do have 2 photos of the pre swim. Please email me if you'd like to see . suziedods@hotmail.com.
Also Sylvia' fb page has a running commentary.
