"Everyone thinks we're crazy"- the MSF t-shirt?

In the new member and motivation threads, variations of this quote continue to arise. I doubt there's one of us who hasn't heard it.
Marathon swimmers: Everyone thinks we're crazy
.

Good for the MSF motto, tagline or hypothetical t-shirt?

Come on, throw some more out here.
You're not a marathon swimmer 'til you've puked while swimming
Marathon swimmers do it for a long time/while wet/in the water
Marathon swimmer: That's not fat, it's bioprene.
Marathon swimmer: I'm just do it for the food
Marathons Swimmer: No, I actually like Dover

I could do this for a while but we have a lot of resident comedians here, so let's hear them!

    A slightly different take for a t-shirt:

Yes, I'm a marathon swimmer, so before you ask:
    1) No, I've never been bitten by a shark, or even seen one.
    2) No, she didn't. At best it was assisted and at worst it was a total fraud.
    3) No, I don't know her and if I did, I wouldn't admit it.
    4) No, I don't even own a wetsuit.
    5) No, we don't stop and get in the boat to rest.
    6) No, not even to go to the bathroom.
    7) No, I've never bumped into a dead body in the Hudson River.
    8) No, triathlon swims aren't marathon swims. They're warmups.
    9) No, my ex left me for another woman, but since it didn't disrupt training/racing I got over it quickly.
    10) Because I really wanted to be a psycho-killer, but wasn't sane enough.

If it has to be a one liner, then:

Marathon Swimming: Because I really wanted to be a psycho-killer, but wasn't sane enough.

@loneswimmer - I'm not sure if I'm honored or have provided yet more proof that I should be institutionalized.

    Here's another one:

Note: For those of you who didn't go to high school in a monastery like I did (yeah, the Jewish guy did high school in a monastery), "prodesse quam conspici" is Latin for (roughly) "To accomplish rather than be conspicuous" or possibly "To accomplish inconspicuously."

These are all great ideas, but I'd like to know if we (MSF) are seriously considering t-shirts, because I'd buy a whole bunch of them. Hell, I'd buy a polo with a nice embroidered emblem and the words MARATHON SWIMMERS FEDERATION on it.

@IronMike, Currently, no we're not. The problem likely wouldn't be quantity, but the range of destinations. Mass orders of caps, t-shirts etc usually ship to a single destination, not a range of international addresses.

Just for future ref- if anyone were ever inclined - you can use sites like inktothepeople.com or Cafe Press and design it then have everyone just buy what they want, from wherever they are, and pay separately... :)

  • IronMikeIronMike Northern VirginiaCharter Member
@jendut, have you ever bought from Cafe Press? I've also found stuff that I liked, but I'm afraid of getting a product that is simply an iron-on.

@loneswimmer, @evmo, is the picture of the swimmer in The Channel trademarked or copyrighted or whatever?

I generated the logo on the main MSF homepage using a screen-cap of a NOAA nautical chart, so technically I think the relevant intellectual property rights belong to the US government (shhh!). So let's please refrain from putting it on any t-shirts for now.

Total coincidence, but I'm currently in the process of getting a new logo designed, which we could use for apparel & such. I should be ready to unveil it next week sometime.

Re: CafePress, I've personally found their stuff to be of low (or at least inconsistent) quality, so if anyone has alternative suggestions, please speak up.

@IronMike I have only had stickers and car magnets made by Cafe Press and they were fine, but I actually can not speak to any clothing... I have used inktothepeople for tshirt sales several times and had very good customer service there. You set up the design then as soon as you reach a certain # of orders they go to press (price gets lower as number or orders gets bigger), that type of thing.

Here is an example- this sweatshirt is prob one of the more expensive items but it could be put on the "market" for 33.00 if 25 people order (goes down a bit if more people get on board). You can set it up to make a profit of not (just charge the baseline cost). Nothing fancy like embroidery though...

Once they have your artwork you can set up a store and people can order the logo on anything they want: shirts, jackets, towels. They often have good sales as well.

The DYST facebook group do T-shirts... You place your order and only once a minimum number are purchased, does the order go through... I'm not sure if they use Cafe Press but I have once before, the quality was excellent but it is a long wait, about a month.
