    Ditto on that.

I recently started a blog http://annecleveland.com/category/wishuponastar/ Now trying to develop the habit of writing posts. I've got lots of stories... what do you all want to hear about? Yoga? Swimming? The yoga of swimming? We're going to have a rainy weekend here so lots of time to write! Let me know...

I think everyone should read Janet's blog: http://forums.usms.org/blog.php?u=8157

...especially when you need a reminder of just how lucky we are to live on a planet that is 70% water (well, the surface anyway). I've swum a lot of miles with Janet and am looking forward to a season of many more! En-JOY!

I don't make frequent entries, but I do post long winded ones on my major swims written from the perspective of someone new to marathon swimming. I highlight them with some gripping commentary, such as: "Boy that took a long time", "I could have swam faster, but I was too chicken to" and "As sh*tty as this is, thank god I'm not on the boat".

Love it, Bob! We all know "nothing great is easy" ... "one stroke at a time" ... "just keep swimming" ... and "even a paper cup will eventually reach France" ...

And we now have: "As sh*tty as this is, thank god I'm not on the boat."

The essential aphorisms of marathon swimming.

    Likewise Dave!

It's not a marathon swim blog, but I really enjoy "Wind Against Current," coauthored by kayakers Vladimir Brezina and Johna Till Johnson. (Vlad paddled for me at Ederle last year). They've written insightfully and beautifully about accompanying record-setting swimmers, NY harbor currents, the beauty of bridges, circumnavigating Manhattan by kayak, and lots of other topics that might be of interest to open-water swimmers. Plus there are some amazing photos of the city and environs as seen from the water--definitely useful and inspiring for anyone doing MIMS or Ederle!

This one's not (directly) about marathon swimming, and only occasionally about OW swimming, but it's a great one - especially for those who live in (or travel to) the NYC metro area. Hannah's 40 Pools was recently covered in The Swimmers Circle and has rapidly gained a following.

Even marathon swimmers have to swim in pools at some point, right?

Hannah, a self-described "pool tourist," is also a certified marathon swimmer, though she's shy about it on her blog. On an unrelated note, Hannah came through in a pinch for me last year - a favor for which I'm still in her debt...
  • Congratulations on the new forum! I have a swimming blog at www.chloemccardel.com/blog. It covers my English Channel double crossing (2010), triple crossing attempt & fastest crossing for the season (2011), my training, shorter swims and other topics relevant to open water swimming. If anyone has any questions with swimming the English Channel and would like to ask me, send me an email :) Happy swimming!!

Here's my little blog with a few o/w swims, picts and info on.
  • Loneswimmer, good luck with that MIMS. Except for your addiction to new, and more extreme challenges, I would question why you would look forward to swimming in a congested, populated area, when you normally have the happy priveledge of swimming in quiet and pristine places. You must know this, but if there are heavy rains prior to, you can be competing with floating propane tanks, stumps, logs, etc., besides the normal plumes of diesel oil, not to mention unsafe e coli levels. 40 years ago, they used to say that Lake Erie was so polluted you could light it on fire, if true I could see you happily swimming through the flames! I prefer the more sedate waters of Vermont, IROC, Lake Memphremagog....maybe too easy for you, but Phil White at IROC has the third annual 24 mile in Sept., in case you haven't done it already. If there is a 40 mph headwind from the North, and it's raining and 40 degrees, you would love it!!

Cheers @Victor, I'm not a fan of freshwater swimming, and I'd prefer jellyfish to toxic runoff any day, I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope for dry weather. Charlotte Brynn from Vermont and Memphre was over here for the distance camp last year, but I dunno, all that time in a lake... you lake swimmers have my respect.

Donal...I had to read your first line of the passage a few times because everytime I did, I kept reading, "I'm not a fan of freshwater swimmer" and thought World War III was about to break out!

@jcmalick Haha. Goggles and handbags at dawn between Evan & I! War of the blogs would be fun, maybe we should give it a shot!

I'm not even denigrating freshwater swimming as a whole, just that it's not my thing. I'm not a good enough enough swimmer to put up the lack of buoyancy for long periods of time, 6 hours is the most I've done in a lake, and that was enough, my shoulder were leaden afterwards.

I'm totally with you...salt is much more of a preference! Give me seaweed and jellies anyday over freshwater grasses and less buoyancy! As Colin Hay wrote...I like swimming in the sea:

Pretty cool. Remember when outside the breakers was a long way away?

I was loving it until he sang about Irish tea but showed Twinings. I would defy you to find Twinings Irish Tea used in Ireland, it's awful! Twinings is the teas they put in hotels across Europe for people who don't know better. It's also not Irish.

It's still a long way away! What are you talking about?!?!? Ha Just Joshing!

Would the video have been more justifiable with Lyons or Barry Tea? (I had to google that!) Sorry Coffee and Hot Chocolate are more my "cup of tea" when water temperatures dictate!
  • loneswimmerloneswimmer IrelandCharter Member
Lyons or Barrys are the only acceptable answers, well done! Hot Chocolate after swims for me also. I give up coffee during training so I use it on the day of big swims and get maximum effect.

I also always enjoy Janet's posts. I nearly always feel like I've been swimming with her when I read them (that's as close as I'll ever come to keeping up with Janet :) ).

I occasionally make entries into Chicken's Nuggets; a slapdash journal of the misadventures of an adult onset lake swimmer.

  • Hi,

New to blogging, and as yet not adept at making it look beautiful like some (eg Donal's award winner), but here it is!

    http://swimsequence.wordpress.com/

Also new to this forum, which is brilliant by the way.

    Best,
