Your First 5K--Seeking Sources

Hey all- I'm working on a short article for SWIMMER magazine about how to train for your first 5K open water race and am seeking a current USMS member to tell me the story of your first 5K and how you trained for it. Working toward a May 1 deadline and would love to set up a 10 or 15 minute phone call to get the specifics of your story. Thanks! Elaine

I'm happy to talk, but I skipped straight over the 5k, and went straight to 10k
I trained for 5Mi swim race in St. Croix from scratch (literally). Started in April and race was early November ... It is not 5K though. I did 5K that summer as a warmup race ... I am happy to talk if you think it is appropriate.
I was a USMS member when I swam my first 5K if that helps.
We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams
I hadn't been involved in swimming since I was 14, but I was training for a triathlon and I figured 5k wasn't THAT much further, so 'why not?'.
same here (happy to talk but skipped 5k for 10k)

I helped my sister train for her first 5k- she's not USMS, but I am. :-)
Thanks, all, for your messages! I've got a source lined up now. :-)
