Keep swimming enough to keep me sane as I finish a four-year graduate school process and find a new job somewhere in the world near the sea. If I can finish a 10k this summer, all the better!
I'm planning to do some of the UK swims using a different stroke this year. Most marathon swims cost a lot of money and I think I would probably derive more satisfaction from doing 10 shorter swims than going "all in" on one marathon swim. So my plan is to repeat some of the swims I've already done but do them slightly differently!
I've gotten several OW butterfly mile events on record. I'm looking to hit 2 miles, or 5K this year depending on what local events are available. I had looked at the Jim McDonnell swim in Reston, VA, USA, but I already have a non-swim event during Memorial Day weekend. The dream is eventually doing 10K in fly. I'm a late bloomer in the swim realm...

I hope to head back to the Great Bear Rainforest again this year and swim some more of the Inside Passage. If possible I would love to swim from Bella Bella just past Namu to the mouth of the Koeye River this time. The waters around Namu have become extremely polluted from the old cannery which may mean needing to do some of the swim in Queen Charlotte Sound. Crossing my toes I can get out that way and work it out.
After a year of moving, mental struggles, and a pregnant wife, now that the kid is here, I'd like to do a long swim (>10 miles) this summer. It's been a couple years since I've successfully completed a 10k, and 2.5 years since I've done a long swim. I have a few ideas in mind, but I'm waiting on a couple pieces of information before I declare a specific goal.
a long swim in the 10K to 10 mile range (tbd where), and 750,000 yards for the year. Doesn't sound like a super ton but it would mean I was healthy/not injured the whole year.
Welp, I managed to finish Swim the Suck in '16. So I plan to go for one more mile...Portland Bridge Swim-11 miles. Has anyone else done it in the past?
In addition to the usual suspects in the Hudson and Vermont, I'll try the swim around charleston and if i can get in STS. for something new i'm going to try and swim around 15 hours in a lake to see if swimming that long brings me joy before spending the big $$$ for a channel. but overall my goal is the same as every year; to swim happy and healthy with nice people in pretty waters!
After my second open water summer and I finished my first 10k without major injury, I of course want to go for a longer race this year. I am hoping that I will not chicken out and will register for SWS this year. Other then that I hope to improve on my past times in shorter races locally, and continue to dream about long adventurous swims in far off lands!
Haven't fully decided on all my goals, but I want to repeat the Great South Bay Swim this year b/c (1) I LOVE the organizers, and (2) I had to DNF last year (blown off course. ... upside was that I ended up swimming longer than the race distance, so ~6 instead of 5.4 miles, great training for Valley Forge Marathon Swim).
Also last year, I swam my longest distance, 8 miles, in the aforementioned Valley Forge Marathon Swim.
So this year, in addition to GSB, I'm looking into 1-2 additional marathon swims, possibly Valley Forge again and another of 8-12 miles. Open to longer if there's a generous current assist and time limit. BLS I'd love to do solo (loved the relay in 2015), but I need more speed for meeting the time limit.
Suggestions welcome!
PS Great South Bay is a little shorter than marathon distance of 10k, but has a lot to recommend it! The people who put it on are truly wonderful and see it as a labor of love. Proceeds go in part to Hospice b/c the girl whom the swim is named after died in a car accident a few days before she was to do the swim. They treat swimmers very well, giving us a goody bag w long sleeve shirt for both swimmer and kayaker a beach towel for the swimmer, and a buffet lunch in a local restaurant for swimmers, kayakers, volunteers, and families. It's very celebratory!
Sounds like one to check out..thanks for the info about the Great South Bay Swim

I loved the Great South Bay Swim, it was my first open water swim > 5 miles and every second felt like heaven. It's been so much fun slowly increasing distance and time in water and staying happy and feeling strong. So this year I'm signed up for the Kingdom Swim (on my 65th birthday) and 20 Bridges in September. In between, I can't wait to get back for Kingdom Week and will likely be signing up for Portland Bridge Swim because I can't think of a better reason to see Portland for the first time. But my real goal for 2017 is to retire soon so I can swim more!!
Maybe come to Philly this year or next and try the Valley Forge Marathon Swim! You'd ace it! Or another option is River Day late July--a 5k swim, immediately followed by a mile swim... a sprint, I know, but a fun day! Barbecue and beer afterward! Also very affordable, low key!
You were terrific in the GSB swim! I got a personal best the year you swam, and you still got me by almost 20 minutes! I want to be like you when I grow up.

Haven't swum it but have been a volunteer. I believe that there will be much less assist from the river's current compared to Swim the Suck but it's a great event. If you, or anyone else for that matter would like input on things Portland feel free to message me.
I'm doing a duo at 2Swim4life, then just concentrating on training swims for my next step up from a 14 mile swim in 2015, the English Channel. My tide opens at the end of August with the good ship Suva. Looking forward to it lots, when I'm awake and can think straight, but I do keep waking up in the middle of the night thinking "Oh my! What have I done?!"
My goal for 2017 is to start establishing some swim goals.
Life got in the way last summer and trying to get going again.
Planning on a swim camp that one of our fellow members puts on and Chesapeake Bay Swim but need to get some longer distance swims lined up.
I'm having a go at doing 2 big swims in one year, Round Jersey and Catalina. No idea if I'm even capable of it, but it's worth a try..... although the thought of it is extremely daunting and I may have bitten off far more than I can chew. Whatever... I won't know if I don't give it a shot. Also have a 4 person EC relay with three new swimmers. I did try to get them to do it as a 3, but have been persuaded to join in. Doing Cork Distance Week for the fourth time. Fabulous training in esteemed company. I learn more every year. . :-) :-SS
Swim Around Lido Key (7 mile);
Great Chesapeake Bay Swim (4.4 mile);
Swim for Life (5 mile);
Escape from Lewes (5K); and
La Jolla Rough Water Gaterman (3 mile).

my goals are slightly smaller. Got back into the pool in December.
My goals are
1.6km ocean swim by the end of March. Have done the distance already but have never swum in the cold ocean with the waves yet so the goal is to overcome that rather than the distance
3.2km lagoon swim in April - Currently doing 2.1km ocean water canal swims at the moment
5km dam and 3.2km ocean swims by Dec
Then 5km ocean swim March 2018
Then robben island to CT 7.5km ocean swim in April 2018
Have smaller goals each month to hopefully get there
I'm doing my first "marathon" in August, 10k at Swim to the Moon. I might do Big Shoulders 5k again--I have to decide soon since registration will open and close quickly March 1st.
I've just started dipping my toe into the idea of truly long distance OWS, and it's keeping me in a good place of being motivated/a little scared!
Well since i am recovering from shoulder surgery my goal is to get back in the water soon and be able to build to a level where I can maintain some respectable level of training distance per workout and frequency per week. If I can be swimming 3-4 days per week, even just around 2km per workout, say around 6 months after surgery, then I will be very happy. I am 3 months post- op now, so we'll see. From what I have read with other people's experience acclimating back to freestyle after surgery, is that the repetitive nature of the stroke is causing a post workout inflammatory response. So I will be cognizant and patient if that is a potential side effect. Bottom line- my goal for 2017 is getting back in the water and building a base again, with good form. 2018 is where I will look to hopefully get into some good, longer distance swims. But I am taking it day by day..

Signed up for Border Bust in Vermont for 25km, Swim the suck (3rd time), Big Shoulders and Geoffrey Keller Memorial Swim, contemplating Swim to the Moon again (did in 2015) and maybe one other if I can figure it out.
Did you sign up of Portland Bridge? I am signed up. It will be my first time in Oregon.

Swimming butterfly across Donner Lake, Truckee CA, in late summer, but not during the actual race in August. Shooting for late July. All swimmers welcome, I can't provide an escort, but I will bring extra donuts.
I'm working on mileage to do the 32 mile length of the lake-- searching for support people. Hoping to do a few long swims and an overnight swim prior to an attempt on a full moon night with clear skies. :-) Anyone groove on boating? For now, I've started a new job (part time) that gets me access to a pool during the winter, and I've done almost 100 miles since January. Up to 10 miles in one day. Yup- 720 pushes off the walls. Yikes. ;-)
I'm signed up for the Bender Memorial (aka the Valley Forge Marathon Swim), which is 8 river miles Labor Day Weekend. I finished the inaugural in 2015, although some GI difficulties that began that morning took the edge off my success. I couldn't feed at all, and ran out of gas with 2 miles left. (btw, it's a lovely event, extremely low-key and inexpensive, highly recommended.)
In 2016, I barely swam at all -- maybe 15,000 total yards the entire calendar year -- and look what happened! The whole world turned upside down. And so many celebrities died. It was all my fault.
So in 2017, I'm back at the switch, and my goal is one million total yards.
I'm currently slightly ahead of pace -- 250K down with 10 days left in March. If I can maintain this workload, avoid injury, log 25 or more open water miles, and stay away from funky food in the days leading up to the Bender, I think 3:45 isn't out of the question. That result would, I think, justify a further commitment, maybe booking an EC attempt for 2019.
Training for my first 10mile swim - Lake Tahoe Crossing on July 10th and Swim from Anacapa to the mainland on Sept 18th. Now I'm freak'in out. So I'm looking for advice on how to train and what do I need to survive.
My goals are to complete my first marathon swim in April at the 7 mile Swim Around Lido Key and then make some new friends as a member of a Boston Light Swim relay in August.

Leaving behind my wetsuit (a shorty) for water below 15ºC.
A couple of 10K in spring/summer, and hopefully a 31K downstream http://ultraebre.com in September
And a 30K in June, which I'm afraid will be wetsuit-compulsory.
