Viking Tahoe Swim

Yesterday I had to pleasure to pilot the second swim of the year in Tahoe. Gary O'Grady swam From Cave Rock to Emerald Bay (to the Vikingsholm). 7h 23m31s. This was the 10th anniversary of the swim. Tom Linthicum (that's me) swam the first one back July 5th 2007. It took me 8 hours. I'm super proud to have been part of Gary's swim. He is a fellow South End Rowing Club member.

I'm also super proud of another South End member, Robin Rose, who swam the length of Tahoe 16h01m. She swam the Viking twice, the English Channel and more to prepare!

2017 swim season is going to be Great! Give me a call anytime if you want a Tahoe update I will be spending time with the Ghost Rider (my boat)!

I want to thank the crew of Robin's team Kim Rutherford, Jack Rose, Cathy Harrington. The crew for Gary's swim Stacy O'Grady, Van Cornwell .

For tracking support Evan Morrison, For swim documentation preparation Dave Van Mouwerik, Scott Tapley.

Best Regards,

Will there be an authoritative list of Viking-route Tahoe swimmers at some point? The first being @Reptile of course!

Yes I plan to put together a list of past swins. We are more focused on length records currently. We are keeping better records now and moving forward with Evan and Dave's help.

Hello! My name is Sarah, and on Friday August 4th I will be doing the Viking solo swim across Lake Tahoe, to raise awareness for programs that use Shakespeare to make their communities better.

I have a boat and a captain and a kayaker, but I am in need of one person to be crew on the boat. Basically, throw me water bottles, tell me what time it is, take awesome pictures and videos and have a smile of encouragement when at mile 10 I just want to quit.

We will meet at 2:00am at the Tahoe Keys Marina. The swim will start at 3:00am. I guesstimate it will take about 7.5 hours, so knocking on the door of the Viking Castle around 10:30am. Fingers crossed I get invited to Valhalla.

Please pass along to anyone who might be interested! Thank you so much!

I'd volunteer (ask Reptile) but I have been banned from helping until after my swim :( Seriously you DON'T want to get invited to Valhalla!

  • Aw, thanks! Good luck! When is your swim? If you need help while I'm in town don't hesitate to ask :-) (And I was totally kidding about Valhalla, haha!)

  • Hello! Sarah again. An update to my solo cross Lake Tahoe swim this Friday. I am unfortunately now also seeking a kayaker. I'm working with Tom (Reptile), but seem to be losing man/woman power quickly, haha. I'm very happy to return the favor and help out with anyone who needs it while I'm in town :-)

So sorry I missed your message, Tom!! You know you all were amazing and I couldn't have done it without you. <3

  • ~AN APOLOGY~

I have tried to find the most relevant places to post this so I can make sure I get this out to anyone who might have found my original above post off-putting in any way. If I have subsequently made a nuisance of myself I apologize once again!

I am definitely a big time marathon swimming newbie. I have been reading and following and learning from you all for a little while now. And I am so grateful for everything that people have posted and responded to; what I have learned, and the caring and support I have witnessed.

And so because I respect and admire this community so much I must apologize.

Back in July I posted the above request for support crew for a Trans Lake Tahoe swim.

In my attempt to be lighthearted and friendly I fear I went too far in downplaying the importance and value of an escort crew and kayaker. I fully appreciate and understand the difficult job of supporting a swimmer. It is by no stretch of the imagination an easy gig. I have come to call my captains and crews my family (I cannot thank you enough, Reptile, Sofra, and Scott!!). I rely so heavily on them, for everything, safety, guidance, encouragement, just to name a few. I can easily say I would not have been able to do any of my swims without them. So I am truly sorry that I ever gave the impression that I felt otherwise.

I humbly ask for your forgiveness as I stumble through all the painful rookie mistakes that I have made, and will probably make in the future, as I navigate these waters of marathon swimming. Please feel free to reach out to me any time to let me know when those moments happen. I am anxious to learn, and if not from the best ( you all :) ) then who?

Thank you so much! Much love and gratitude!

    ~Sarah
