Doing a marathon swim with bursitis?

So I appear to have picked up bursitis (diagnosis based on a quick physio visit), probably due to a combination of bad posture, faults in stroke, lots of swim training etcetera. Been taking it easy the last few weeks but it hasn't so far cleared up. Have the Rotto swim this Saturday, the physio didn't seem concerned that I was going to attempt the swim, just curious if anyone has any good advice for making it through the swim? Thinking of mixing kids ibuprofen with at least some of the feeds, though don't want to kick up any GI distress.

Backstroke is my worst stroke (I can't actually do butterfly so I don't count it).

I ask because backstroke uses somewhat different muscles, and I personally have found it effective in relieving shoulder stress. Not sure where in particular the bursitis is affecting you...

I've been told before that adding backstroke to your work out is a good idea, but because I suck at it have always resisted. Am keen to keep on swimming though, so that is a particularly powerful incentive to overcome my dislike of the stroke. Will be making an effort to add it in after I get back from Oz.

Good luck at Rotto, @dc_in_sf, and I hope the injury doesn't keep you from your goal. Let us know how it goes!

    Good luck in Rotto!
Is this the same as impingement syndrome? I struggled with that all last year. I think mine was due to overly tight neck and upper back muscles. My PT really helped with some very painful massage. I iced my shoulders constantly, too. It's a lot better now, but maybe because I've had so much time off sick

I had bursitis in my thigh a few weeks ago due to overenthusiastic cycling... a shot of cortisone was extremely painful the first couple of days, then the thing subsided and is now like new. Something to consider?
  • Bursitis is a sack filled with fluid that swells up, i think i was told its is between muscles and joints. I have them in the past and an impingement and also what I still have calcific growths around my shoulder. I realise I am typing this just as Rotto is about to kick off but cortizone injection should help, theraband, icing and physio.

Thanks @greekswimmer. I've been icing a lot, and using ibuprofen the last week, certainly seems to have calmed things down, will likely be a "fun" swim nonetheless :-)
